Research has shown that most people gain pain relief from Acupuncture, and this is generally due to the release of endorphins into the body during the Acupuncture process. Endorphins are pain inhibiting substances offering the patient an analgesic effect. The scientific proof of the release of endorphins allows Acupuncture to be integrated with conventional medicine. Clinical trials provide evidence that it has a powerful and sustained effect on muscular skeletal pain. It is now commonly used in General Practice, Physiotherapy Departments and Pain Clinics as a complement to conventional medicine.

The body cans "self repair; the use of Acupuncture enhances the repair mechanism and enables an improved recovery time allowing other physiotherapy treatments such as exercise, muscle strengthening and rehabilitation which can achieve effective results. Acupuncture is used by Physiotherapists, against a background of sound research and evidence, as a means of enhancing pain modulation via the stimulation of the brain. These assist the body's healing process and offer pain relief as a precursor for other manual or exercise therapy. Acupuncture is also used by Advanced AACP members as a means of addressing some systemic and longer term illness, but always with the aim of enhancing physiotherapy treatment and improving the quality of life.

Acupuncture is used within physiotherapy as an integrated approach to the management of pain, inflammation and as a means of enhancing the body's own healing chemicals in order to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation. Acupuncture  is used within the background of clinical and research evidence. The concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] is an ancient system of written scripts as far back as 1000BC, founded on the holistic concept of treatment and an acknowledgement of the body's ability to return to its balanced state of health, given the correct stimulus to do so. Treatment with Acupuncture is undertaken with the aim or restoring all the body systems to a state of balance (homeostasis). This is achieved by an in depth physiotherapy assessment to determine the source of the imbalance and the correct acupuncture points required to address this imbalance and facilitate the body's return to a state of health both physically and mentally.

Western medicine demands rapid results, with most patients receiving a course of 7-8 treatments and achieving good results. Where patients have chronic conditions, they are encouraged to return every six months or so for 'top  This keeps the symptoms under control and usually entails one or two treatments at these follow-on sessions.
